PEI CREDIT UNIONS GARNER NATIONAL AWARD FROM CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY

Charlottetown, April 23, 2010

(Charlottetown, PE - April 22, 2010) – Outstanding volunteers and businesses were recognized by the Canadian Cancer Society, PEI Division for their contributions to the fight against cancer. National Board Chair, Jimm Simon and Betty Newson, Society President presented the awards in Charlottetown as part of The Society’s Annual General Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Awards ceremony. 

National Award recipients, the Credit Unions of PEI, were presented with the National Community Champion Award by Jimm Simon, Chair of the Canadian Cancer Society, National Board of Directors.  “The financial contribution of $100,000 by the Credit Unions of Prince Edward Island to the Canadian Cancer Society is a significant commitment to be recognized,” said Simon. “but it’s also the commitment of the staff and management at each Credit Union in raising funds and volunteering that makes them a community champion”
 
Louis Shea accepted the award on behalf of the Credit Unions of PEI and took the opportunity to not only thank the National organization for the award but to also announce their continued commitment.  “Being the provincial sponsor for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in PEI is not only about fighting cancer, but joining our communities across the province in that fight,” said Shea. “That is why we are pleased to announce today that we will be continuing our support for the Relay For Life with another 5-year, $100,000 commitment.”
