2010-04-30 - Credit Unions Pledges $100,000

PEI Credit Unions announced today that they are pledging an additional $100,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life event.  These dollars represent renewal of the Credit Unions’ commitment as Provincial Event Sponsor of the Relays across PEI.  Credit Unions began their partnership with the Cancer Society in 2006, and today’s announcement extends that commitment until 2016.

The contribution of $200,000 over 10 years represents the corporate donation from the ten Prince Edward Island Credit Unions.  In addition, Credit Union staff participates in fund raising though their individual relay teams.  To date, this represents an additional $ 10,000.00 annually.

“Being the provincial sponsor for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in PEI is not only about fighting cancer, but joining our communities across the province in that fight,” said Louis Shea, who made the announcement at the Annual Meeting of the Cancer Society, on behalf of PEI Credit Unions.

Credit Unions have 15 locations across Prince Edward Island and assets in excess of ¾ billion dollars.  Each year Credit Unions across PEI commit more than $250,000 to Island communities.

Relay For Life, a signature event of the Canadian Cancer Society, is a celebration of survival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones touched by cancer. Teams of 10 to 12 people raise funds and participate in a 12-hour overnight non-competitive relay. Participants take turns walking, running, or strolling around a track, and celebrate the courage of those who have faced cancer.
